The Philippines: 7641 Islands and You’re All in El Nido? Why?!

Ok, We’re Guilty Aswell…

Mary-Ann and I standing on a windy hill in the in the Philippines back in 2016.
I do miss long hair, but I don’t miss it in the wind! And yes, she got very hot with all those braids!

Fear Not – I’m Here to Help!

Where To Start…

1. Palawan: A Tough Act To Follow

A picture from a boat tour in El Nido, 2015. You can see it is full of tourists, and you can see the rocky outcrops int he background.
My photography skills aren’t exactly good now, but back then they really sucked. Also, note that 10 years ago, in wet season with a cyclone looming, the tour boats were still completely full.

Have You Heard of the Camotes Islands?

An image of a rocky cliff with a wooden-plank-diving board on the top.
It does have some rocky stuff, including some cliff jumping!
Does it Have Good Beaches?
An image of a dog sitting on its haunches begging for food.
There are also stupid dogs willing to humiliate themselves for a chip!
Mary-Ann standing on a beach, with some local houses and a green headland in the distance.
One end of Santiago Beach – those are locals houses! No over-tourism here!
How About Tours?
A view from a hill inthe Camotes island, looking across a wildflower field and out to sea.
I’d suggest going to look at the views from Alta Vista!
So, What About the Missing Rocky Stuff?
Mary-Ann in a cave pool.
One of many underground cave pools!
You’re Sold, Aren’t You?

2. Siargao: Or More Specifically – General Luna

A Tech-deck finger-board skate park on a table top by the beach inGeneral Luna.
I didn’t see a single Tech-Deck-Table-Top skate park in Bali! 1-0 Siargao!

Option 1: I Know, I’m Cheating Here

A picture of a crystal clear, shallow rock pool with a clown fish looking at me.
A true ‘Finding Nemo’ moment – there was a baby one there too, no bigger than a pinky fingernail!

Option 2: Leave the Surfers and Go to Camiguin

A beautiful view down a hilly road, with trees, palms and a mountain in shot.
An example of a moped ride in Camiguin! But do make sure to get a bike with good brakes – we almost had another Bali moment on a steep hill!
Does it Have Good Beaches?
One of the most spectacular evening skies we saw on our entire trip. Red and orange crepuscular rays stretching across the sky.
We had quite the view at dinner one evening!
What Else is There to Do?
Mary-Ann standing infront of an epic Island view, across forest, mountain and sea.
Camiguin has some pretty incredible views to be found! Just go hiking!
Give It a go!
Mary-Ann wading into a chilly pool at the bottom of a waterfall.
This kind of waterfall is EXACTLY what a seriously sweaty gooch needs after a hike.

3. Panglao (Bohol) – It Was Our Favourite, 10 Years Ago!

An image of a grilled fish meal we had in Panglao back in 2015, with a fish named after me - a jack fish!
I saw a ‘Jack fish’ for sale at the restaurant on Alona beach… I had no option other than to buy it.

Again, I’m Kinda Cheating… Anda is Also on Bohol.

An evening sunset picture of a bech in Anda, with locals enjoying the water!
A beach full of locals enjoying their home! I think they liked us being there because we seemed to distract ALL of the mosquitos away from them – we were eaten alive!
Does it Have Beaches?
A daytime photo of a lovely local beach in Anda, with some dive boats out to see.
The boats out at sea are dive boats! The reef drop-off there makes for fantastic free diving!
What About Tours?
A view across an amazing hilly rice terrace in Bohol.
Rice Terraces just 40 minutes away on the moped.
Me taking a swim in the blue waters of one of Andas cave pools.
Please excuse the bald man in shot.
There’s No Real Downside to Anda!

4. Coron: It Pairs Well With Palawan, I Know.

A cloudy picture from a top Coron hill back in 2015, looking out across the island-riddled sea.
Again, my photography skills were truly appalling in 2015… What rule of thirds? And who wants a straight picture anyway?

Well, If Coron Pairs With Palawan… Apo Island Pairs With the Camotes (Sort Of)

A view out from a view point on Apo Island, you can see the village, the trees, a lagoon, and an expanse of ocean.
That is the extent of the village on Apo – there’s not loads there!
Does it Have Good Beaches?
A very small, locals beach on Apo island, covered in fishing boats and shacks.
You also get a great view of Negros island in the distance!
What Else is There to Do?
Another viewpoint on Apo island, this time across a bay with a white sand beach and crystal clear blue waters.
There is also a couple of rather lovely mini-hikes you can do on Apo, that take you to either end of the island to enjoy some delightful views!
It’s Not Quite the Same, I Know.

5. Boracay: I Admit, We’ve Never Been…

Siquijor – Be Quick. It’s Getting Popular, Fast!

A young Mary-Ann and I crouched in a case infront of a rather impressive chunk of calcite-flow stone.
Also, you have to check out Cantabon cave if it’s still open. We were lead through by a lovely couple of 70+ yr old women – brilliant fun!
Does It Have Beaches and Bars Like Boracay?
A blurry picture of the cinema screenn hung in a tree outside the Baha Bar in siquijor. You can just about make out Dr. Evil sat aroudn his table with his evil minions.
I believe that is Dr. Evil holding a meeting in his Evil Lair…
What Else Is There To Do?
Mary-Ann watching a local use a rope swing to jump into the blue water of a waterfall pool on Siquijor.
One of the various waterfalls – this one had rope swing a lot of friendly locals!
Siquijor Almost Didn’t Make This List

That’s All, Folks!

Stone steps leading down to the unreal blue waters of the Enchanted rivers in Mindanao. It doesnt look real!
Another insanely beautiful place that didn’t get a mention for safety reasons – the Enchanted River in Mindanao. I just can’t advise going there due to political and civil unrest in the region!

Stay bald folks.

Toodles,

Jack
